Street name sign in New York showing Wall Street

Wall Street is where the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is located. Although technically, Wall Street is the eight-block-long street which runs from Broadway to East River, the entire financial district of New York is called Wall Street. All of America’s financial markets are also called Wall Street.

So why is it called the Wall Street?
Wall Street was laid out behind a 12-foot-high wood wall across lower Manhattan in 1685. The wall was built to protect the Dutch settlers from British and Native American attacks.
